Daesang
Daesang is a South Korean food company and the parent of the Chung Jung One brand. From Daesang we stock jocheong rice malt syrup and corn syrup, two staple Korean sweeteners.
The company was founded in Busan in 1956 by Lim Dae-hong under the name Dong-A Whasung and was the first in Korea to launch a fermented seasoning, Miwon. Since 1964 it has also produced starches and sweeteners; in 1996 it launched the Chung Jung One brand and has been called Daesang since 1997. Today it is based in Seoul and operates in more than 80 countries.
What we stock
Rice malt syrup (jocheong) is a traditional Korean sweetener made from rice and malt – it is amber, thick and has a gentle malty taste. Corn syrup (mulyeot) is clear and neutral in taste, so it only lightly sweetens food and gives it a glossy finish. We sell both in 700 g packs.
In Korean cooking, the syrups are added to sauces to give them shine and body – in tteokbokki, glazed fried chicken dakgangjeong, braised chicken jjimdak or the side dish myeolchi bokkeum made from stir-fried anchovies. The syrup does not need refrigerating; if it crystallises, stand it in warm water.
