Hario

Origin: Japan1 product on offer

Hario is a Japanese maker of heatproof glass and coffee equipment from Tokyo, whose V60 dripper is a favourite tool of baristas. From Hario we stock the V60-02 Dripper.

The company was founded in 1921 by Hiromu Shibata in Tokyo's Kanda district as a maker of laboratory glassware. The name Hario comes from the Japanese words for glass and king – "king of glass". In 1948 the company launched its first household product, a vacuum coffee maker (siphon). Hario has its own heatproof glass factory in Koga, Ibaraki Prefecture – according to the company, the only one of its kind in Japan.

The V60 dripper

Hario launched the V60 dripper in 2005. It is named after its V-shaped cone with a 60° angle. Spiral ribs run all the way to the rim and hold the paper filter away from the wall so air can escape, and the large hole at the bottom lets you influence the flavour through the speed of pouring. According to Hario, half of the World Brewers Cup champions have won with a V60.

What we stock

The V60-02 Dripper is the medium size for 1–4 cups. Following Hario's instructions, put 10–12 g of medium-fine ground coffee per cup (120 ml) into a folded paper filter, pour over a little water and let it bloom for 30 seconds. Then slowly add water in a circular motion from the centre outwards, finishing the whole brew within 3 minutes.
