Production was started in 1935 by Yeung Chai Huei, an immigrant from China's Fujian province, in Pasuruan in East Java. The factory's name, Sindu Amritha, means "river of nectar" in Sanskrit, and the abbreviation Sin A means "new Asia" in Chinese. The company is now run by the fourth generation of the family, has managed global sales from Hong Kong since 1976, and the sweets are exported to more than 20 countries.

The sweets are made from a local emprit ginger variety from the highlands around the Bromo volcano in Java. Following an old family recipe, the ground ginger is slowly cooked with cane sugar – the result is chewy sweets with a sharp ginger taste and caramel sweetness, with no added preservatives.
