Matamun
Matamun is a brand of Korean tteok rice cakes from Young Poong of Daegu. From Matamun we stock rice cake sticks for tteokbokki and sliced rice cakes, both in 600 g packs.
Young Poong was founded in 1993 in Daegu in south-eastern Korea and has used the Matamun brand – Korean for roughly "holding on to flavour with love" – since 2001. Under the Yopokki brand it also makes instant tteokbokki in cups, which it exports to around 100 countries. It has a patented process that keeps its rice cakes fresh at room temperature.
What we stock
Rice cake sticks are the classic base for spicy tteokbokki, while sliced rice cakes are used mainly in tteokguk, the New Year soup, but also in tteokbokki. The rice cakes contain 99% rice, and the 600 g pack is divided into three 200 g bags.
Soak hardened rice cakes in lukewarm water for 10–20 minutes, then cook them in sauce or stock for 5–10 minutes until soft. For tteokbokki, just simmer them with spicy gochujang paste, a little sugar and eomuk fish cakes.
