Product description
What is it
Samyang Buldak are Korean instant noodles in a dry form, meaning they come without broth. The name buldak is translated as "fire chicken" and refers to a popular spicy chicken dish of Korean cuisine. The chicken-flavoured noodles in this version are among the spiciest in the Buldak range. It was this range that made the fire noodle challenge popular online. The Samyang brand was founded in South Korea in 1963, and it was the first there to introduce instant ramen.
Taste and Properties
The sauce is intensely spicy and combines chilli peppers with habaneros. It is flavoured with chicken, garlic and soy sauce, with a subtle sweetness on top. Sources put the heat of the original variant at around 4,400 Scoville units. For an average diner, this is a very hot dish. It is best suited to those who already have experience with spicy noodles. It includes flakes of toasted sesame seeds and nori seaweed. These soften the flavour and give the dish a crispy texture.
Preparation
Method according to the label:
- Cook the noodles in water for approximately 5 minutes (the label states 600 ml).
- Pour off the water, but leave 8 spoonfuls in the pot.
- Add the sauce from the sachet and stir everything together for about 30 seconds, until the noodles absorb the sauce.
- Finally, sprinkle in the flakes, stir and serve.
Usage and Tips
Noodles are a quick lunch or dinner. You can reduce the spiciness by not using the whole sauce, or by diluting it with more water. Eggs, grated cheese, vegetables, or pieces of chicken go well with the heat. Milk or yogurt served with the meal are a common way to calm the spiciness in Korea. Watch out for allergens: the product contains wheat (gluten), soy, celery and sesame. Store in a dry place.
